Growing concerns about public hygiene and the spread of infectious microorganisms have increased demand for effective antimicrobial materials in both consumer and industrial applications. Issues such as hospital-acquired infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), foodborne illnesses associated with pathogenic bacteria, and environmental contamination by microorganisms have heightened the need for products that can inhibit microbial growth while maintaining safety and durability. Among the various antimicrobial technologies available, inorganic antimicrobial agents have attracted considerable attention because of their long-lasting performance, heat resistance, and compatibility with a wide range of materials. Silver-based antimicrobial agents are particularly valued due to their strong antimicrobial activity and favorable safety profile. To address these needs, Toagosei developed NOVARON, a silver-ion-containing inorganic antimicrobial agent based on zirconium phosphate technology. This paper reviews the characteristics, antimicrobial mechanisms, safety, evaluation methods, and practical applications of NOVARON, highlighting its broad-spectrum effectiveness against bacteria, fungi, and resistant microorganisms, as well as its suitability for use in fibers, plastics, coatings, building materials, household products, and other antimicrobial applications.
